Tree Fruit Update
Thinning has begun for some in the San Joaquin Valley; others believe that Mother Nature thinned for them when the freeze hit in mid March. In any case, projections are for a strong crop beginning a day or two later then last year.
As many know, the only thing a farmer can predict is that the weather will be unpredictable. But many, including HMC are taking steps to remove a small portion of the guess work. The picture in the background is of a hail cannon. Cannons are fired remotely, and are used to break up water precipitate that could potentially form hail. When the cannons are fired shock waves are sent into the atmosphere at the speed of sound. The device is fired repeatedly every 4 seconds when the storm is approaching and does not cease until it has passed.
