Watch a newly planted grape vine grow and develop through the month of May. Watch one of our nectarines grow from a bud to a ripe piece of fruit. Summer is here. Cold weather has put a hold on everything here in the valley. Historically our first peaches were picked the first week of May. This year, we are two weeks in and still no peaches. Heavy rain last week, but no hail was spotted. The forecast this week is for rain tonight and maybe tomorrow. Once the rain is gone there is a high pressure system moving in which means it should stay warm the next 10 to 12 days. As of now, estimates for Plums and Nectarines are both [...] The buds are blossoming and here at HMC Farms we are slowly shifting from winter to spring. The winter is the time our trees rest and recoup for the upcoming tree fruit season. The three things in the winter that greatly affect the outcome of our summer crop are; chill hours, rainfall, and bloom timing. Only ten days after being grafting, the new wood is already showing signs of growth. The graft taking means there was a clean seal, good wood, and that no water seeped into the exposed limb. Below are a few pictures of the growth on the same trees you saw being grafted in the previous blog. We do the best we can every year to pick out new varieties at the nursery, mostly using gut feeling about how these varieties will work in our lineup. For whatever reason, they don’t always work out.
